Q: What is the difference between pellets and granules?

The raw material for our STROY® pellets is thermally treated to keep it free of germs and dust and pressed into pellets under high pressure. This allows the material to develop its highly absorbent effect in the best possible way. In addition, the products can be packed and transported to you in a space-saving manner. However, in order for a suitable mat to form in the stable and for the bedding not to be mistaken for feed, the pellets must break down into their basic structure again. Watering is therefore necessary. The production of STROY® granules requires an additional step in which the resulting pellets are crushed. This creates a larger absorption surface for the material, the horses do not eat it and it does not have to be made wet. This means that the bedding is able to absorb even more moisture (i.e. urine). Over time, the material breaks down on its own and forms a mat, as with normal pellets.

Are the pellets eaten by horses?

Accepted Answer

It has been observed that some horses try the products as long as they are still in pellet form. Therefore, it must be ensured that the horses only come into contact with the pellet bedding once it has been sufficiently watered and the pellets have broken down.

Which bedding is best for which stable?

Accepted Answer

The bedding option and choice of product depends on the conditions of the bedding location, the surface of the bedding area, the number of horses / area and the habits of the animals. It is best to use our bedding advisor.

Miscanthus pellets | In our experience, miscanthus is the most durable product. It forms a highly absorbent mat that suppresses ammonia formation.

Straw pellets, granules | If a horse urinates repeatedly in the same place and this causes waterlogging,
even the most absorbent bedding can no longer bind the ammonia. The bedding must be replaced more often in these “pee spots”.
It therefore makes sense to use a product that is less durable from the ground up, such as our STROY® straw pellets or straw granules. A mix of different bedding products is therefore possible under certain circumstances.

Why are STROY® products more absorbent than traditional straw?

Traditional straw is not particularly absorbent due to its structure. The thermal treatment and shredding of the material results in a larger absorption surface, which makes the STROY® product of higher quality and significantly more absorbent.
